About
We are Atlanta’s radical marching band. We have been together since November 2007 and have 20+ members and 10 songs. We are actively recruiting all instruments, especially melody instruments, trombones and sousaphones. If you don’t have an instrument, we might have one that you can borrow. If you haven’t played in years (or ever), don’t sweat it! We’re open to all skill levels (as long as you’re willing to work at it) and have a number of people who are learning or relearning an instrument.
A radical marching band is a street band with trumpets, trombones, tubas, clarinets, saxophones, snares, flutes, bass drums, banjoes, violins, melodicas, and more. Some bands include dancers, flag twirlers, fire breathers and more. Many cities have one: check out www.honkfest.org to see some. The band could play indoors or outdoors, standing still or moving. It’s fun but political and would support demonstrations, protests and rallies in addition to playing for good organizations at their benefits and parties. (By political, we mean: supporting women’s issues, queer rights, immigrants, unions, community groups, people of color and fighting against war, violence, racism, sexism, etc.)
Why should and how can I join? You should join because it’ll be fun, because you feel bored at protests, because you like getting people to smile and dance, because you want to do something about everything that’s wrong with the world, and help the people who do good. (Not to mention meeting some awesome radical folks.) Doesn’t matter if you’re a virtuoso or haven’t played in years; heck, maybe you don’t have an instrument and are willing to learn. Everyone is welcome and people of color, women, and people of different sexual preferences and gender expressions are especially encouraged.
